The Autotheoretical Approach in Yannick Haenel’s La solitude Caravage: Intermediality between Literature and Painting. The following study focuses on the autotheoretical process used by Yannick Haenel in his essay, La solitude Caravage. The main hypothesis is that, through the relationship between literature and painting, the French writer creates his own theories regarding the creative process, hiding them under the mask of an apparent biography of the Italian painter Caravaggio. By closely examining Yanick Haenel’s text, we reveal how he uses intermediality as a creative force in his literary work, aiming to demonstrate that his essay belongs to the autotheoretical genre. As a methodological approach, the first part of the article is dedicated to the explication of the main characteristics of autotheory and those of intermediality, before moving on to the practical part, where we focus on the author’s actual writing process (intermediated by his contact with Caravaggio’s paintings), and on the analysis of the essay that becomes an ars poetica. The main conclusion of the article is that Yannick Haenel proposes a hybrid work that constructs an intermedial space, a place of meeting between his literary creed and Caravaggio’s pictorial creed, while creating at the same time a literary posture.
