Abstract

Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most noted tragedies. The Bard wrote the play between 1603 and 1607, and it was already performed in the year 1611. This tragedy, which due to the belief that it is cursed is most often referred to as “The Scottish play”, grabbed Giuseppe Verdi’s attention. It also prompted the composer to write an opera based on the play in 1846, and try ingeniously to render Shakespeare’s deeply psychological approach to his characters as well as entire narrative thread into music.

The following text proposes to take an analytical approach toward Verdi’s opera, bearing in mind its famous source, as well as the composer’s deep admiration to the theme.
