EL LEGADO BARROCO EN LA LITERATURA ESPAÑOLA DEL SIGLO XX

Abstract

The Baroque Legacy in 20th-Century Spanish Literature. The present paper aims to analyze the similarities and differences between Spanish literature of Golden Age and that of the 20th century, with concrete examples, which highlight the Baroque influence on Silver Age literary production. The last mentioned period was market by innovations, the renewal of narrative themes and techniques, the search for new forms of expression and new styles, oscillating between tradition and external influences, between the opening towards Europe and the return to national values, especially those of the Golden Age (Baroque), with the aim of regaining the Spanish national spirit and regenerating the country marked by a pronounced decadence. Authors, for example, Miguel de Unamuno, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ramón Pérez de Ayala, Ramiro de Maeztu, José Ortega y Gasset, turn their attention to characters such as Don Quixote and Don Juan, to which they refer to comment on what had been written before, to rewrite and reinterpret traditional Hispanic myths, to interpret the past and treat it from a different perspective. Although we are talking about different styles, aesthetic criteria and literary contexts, there is a common ground between literary creations from the two reference periods. Consequently, to understand modern Spanish literature we cannot ignore its legacy from the glorious literary past.
