Abstract

The year 2025 marked a double anniversary connected to the name of Paul Richter: 150 years since his birth and 75 years since the death of the Brașov-born composer. This study centers on the Sechs Lieder nach chinesischen Texten für eine Frauenstimme und Orchester, Op. 95. The composer’s attention to the subtleties of the poetic text, the diversity of musical imagery and timbral nuances, as well as his refined handling of all elements of musical language (melody, harmony, rhythm, agogics, dynamics), become particularly evident. In this cycle of vocal miniatures, Richter reveals a refined capacity for synthesizing a broad spectrum of distinct yet fundamental images within a concise formal framework. He carefully selects and deploys, at structurally and expressively decisive moments, those components of musical language best suited to articulate the desired affect and poetic imagery with clarity and precision. The intrinsic beauty and subtle refinement of these miniatures persuaded me to undertake a chamber adaptation, one that proves considerably more practical to stage, requiring a reduced number of performers.
