Prevalence and Factors Associated with Growth Plate Injuries in Children and Adolescent Basketball Players in Malang City

This study aims to determine the prevalence of growth plate injuries and factors associated with injury in children and adolescent basketball players in Malang City. The study used a quantitative descriptive design with
a cross-sectional approach in 80 basketball players aged 8-17 years. Data collection was conducted using a Reported Condition Inquiry questionnaire that included the duration of training, injury history, anatomical location of injury, and mechanism of injury experienced by basketball players. The results showed an injury prevalence of 83.8% with 70% of them involving the growth plate area. The most common injury locations were the ankle (26.3%) and the knee (21.3%). The most dominant risk factors were direct contact and non-contact, each contributing 37.5% to the incidence of injury. These findings indicate that basketball players are highly susceptible to growth plate injuries due to the high physical demands of basketball and immature bone structure. This study emphasizes the importance of implementing injury prevention strategies through muscle strengthening, movement techniques, and adjusting training loads according to the developmental stage of basketball players.
