Along the Threshold between Peacefulness and Hostility: A Review of Bucharest Dada Week

Abstract

From the 20th -25th of June, Bucharest celebrated the Dada Centenary. Dada Week was organized by the Center of Excellence in the Study of Image at The University of Bucharest, on the initiative of the director of the Center, Professor Sorin Alexandrescu. It included one evening of film projections at the Romanian Cinematheque, four days of open lectures at the Romanian National Museum of Art (MNAR) and a two-day International Conference at the Central University Library (BCU). Such interdisciplinary events are alway a great opportunity for extended debates and the fertile exchange of ideas. Dada Week was no exception.

RALUCA BIBIRI is Associate Professor of Women's Studies at the University of Bucharest, Center of Excellence in the Study of Image. She has written two books on the concept of femininity in philosophy, psychoanalysis, culture and the arts, and on the literary and visual self-representation of women during the Romanian Communist Regime respectively. In 2008 she has produced a series of six documentaries depicting how women were displayed in television programs during the Romanian Communist Regime, that have been broadcasted by the Cultural Channel of the Romanian Public Television. Bibiri's most recent interest is in the area of Maternal Studies, which she views as central to the inquiry into the development of sexual identity.
