Abstract

Between hospitality and Foreignness: Representations of 17^th–18^th-Century Haban Communities in Contemporary Memoirs. The structure, beliefs, and history of the Habanic communities can be understood from the perspective of theology and history. However, what can the literary perspective tell us about this community? How are these outsider communities represented in contemporary text(s)? My study focuses on literary representations of Habanese communities of the 17^th and 18^th centuries, who were torn between perpetual strangeness and homeliness as they sought to find their place in the contemporary system. I will approach the concept of strangeness based on Jaques Derrida’s theory, which presents this experience from an entirely new perspective. The first focus of my analysis is the Hutterian chronicle, which presents a specific collective experience, a history. Through Derrida’s interpretation of strangeness and hospitality, we can see a particular worldview and history that can be considered unique through the alternation of external and internal perspectives. The Anabaptist chronicle presents a new perspective on the functioning and history of their communities and the difficulties, political system, and cultural particularities of being in Transylvania in the 17^th century. Starting from the perspective and thematic unity of home and strangeness, it offers new interpretative perspectives for understanding and interpreting these communities, complementing the historical and theological perspectives.
