Athanasius and the Theological Foundations of his anti-Arianism. Known for his defence of the Nicene Creed in 325, Athanasius of Alexandria waged a fierce and decisive struggle against Arianism, which denied the divinity of the Son of God by reducing him to a divine creature and calling into question his equality with the Father. After showing the complexity of the Arian theses and the reasons for their rejection of homoousios, this article attempts to present Athanasius' theological and biblical rationale for his anti-Arianism. Homoousios thus enabled Athanasius to lay the foundations of his Trinitarian theology.
