Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the natural antioxidant properties of endemic Lophanthus turcicus (Nepeta turcica) based on its phenolic compound and vitamin content. Phenolic compounds and vitamins were determined by HPLC, while radical scavenging, Fe²⁺ chelating, and anti-hemolytic activitiy were determined spectrophotometrically. The main phenolic compounds identified were chrysin, naringin, trans-ferulic and chlorogenic acid, with values measured as 1502.03 ± 155.19, 411.37 ± 0.19, 236.63 ± 1.73 and 52.44 ± 2.77 µg/g dry weight, respectively. Vitamin levels were determined as retinol (2.20 ± 0.16) > alpha-tocopherol (1.55 ± 0.19) > phylloquinone (0.34 ± 0.096) µg/g dw. Radical scavenging activity tests, metal chelating and antihemolytic analyses of the methanol extract showed that the plant has a significant antioxidant activity in vitro. In particular, metal chelating activity (IC50 36.93 ± 3.39 μg/mL) was found to be very close to the values of the reference BHT (IC50 30.20 ± 0.54 μg/mL). Determination of anti-hemolytic activity (plant IC50 75.26 ± 2.30 μg/mL; Trolox: 59.55 ± 1.81 μg/mL) indicates that L. turcicus may protect the cell membrane against oxidative damage. These findings suggest that the plant contains biologically active compounds and may be a properties source of natural antioxidants.
